Are you using one of the worst putting tips?

This tip is given out to thousands of golfers on a daily basis and genuinely I think it's messing up most of them.

'Get your Eyes over the ball'

This is the tip that has ruined many rounds of golf over the years. As a kid, I was taught to drop a ball from my eye in my posture and it must land on the ball I am about to hit. This will ensure that my eyes are over the ball. I'm sure you have read something similar or been taught this by your local pro or fellow amateur partners.

Well it's a load of rubbish, the likely hood is it will mess you up!

I best explain my reasoning now. Sorry for my rant, but I am very passionate about this subject and it really does my head in when this tip is given out!

From my testing, over 90% of golfers don't 'See the Line straight' with their eyes over the ball.

What do I mean by 'See the Line straight'?

In the image above you can see Josh set up in his putting posture with a drill stick on the floor pointing towards the hole.

When a player sets up to the drill stick, as a coach, what I am interested in is where it appears to be pointing to to the player. Typically this wont be at the middle of the hole. In fact, for 90% of golfers this will appear to be offline.

This is why most golfers struggle using a line on the ball because the line on the ball appears to be pointing in a different place to where they intend to aim. This causes conflict in the mind when we are over the ball ready to putt.

So, if the line looks to be going to the right the players tendency is to Aim their putter left. If the line looks to be going to the left the players tendency is to Aim their putter right.

The really interesting part to this is that you can change where the drill stick appears to be aiming by altering;

- Distance stood from the ball

- Ball position

- Posture

As you can see from the images on the right.

If you have managed to keep reading to this point you now have 3 options

1 - Experiment yourself by placing a drill stick down and working out where it visually is pointing. Then experiment altering the 3 points above to see if you can get it to point straight.

There is a downside to this on your own. If you make an alteration you are likely to change something else?

For example - You may find that having the ball further back in your stance the line looks straight, Great, however this may make you hit down on the ball, causing an inconsistent ball roll making distance control difficult to judge.
