THSG Juniors enjoy British Open experience

Last week I was fortunate enough to be at Woburn Golf Club with British amateur champion Emily Toy at the Open Championship.
After her big win last month, Emily, from Carlyon Bay golf club in Cornwall, was invited to play in this prestigious event to compete against the best golfers in the world.
I have worked with Emily for the past 6 months and I am very impressed with her all-round golfing improvement. Her golf game is phenomenal, and she has no real weaknesses. She also is a lovely young lady and she handles herself extremely well. Her dedication levels are extremely rare, and very similar to our own Niall Powell, she continues to improve herself towards her end-goal.
So on Friday I decided to take the juniors. Lucy, Calvin and Oli have been committed and dedicated to our ever growing THSG junior programme here at ROWGC. They attend 2/3 sessions each week and they absolutely live and love the golf here.
Thanks to the parents (and Leanne who came with us), we had an early and punctual start, getting to Winchcombe for 7:30am and on the road to Woburn. We made it through the gates at 9:30.
We all carried rucksacks full of water, sun cream, ROWGC shirts, caps and sharpie pens. We were all buzzing for the day ahead!
We proceeded straight to the course to catch up with Emily to see how she was getting on. She scored four over par on day one, so needed a super score to make the cut. She started solidly, and the kids got a token thumbs-up which made them giggle.
We watched a few groups off the second tee, and they loved watching them smash a driver absolutely miles. We headed to the spectator area where there were lots of fun activities, including Putting competitions, chipping competitions and a shop with lots of golfing goodies. There was also an area where PGA professionals were offering free lessons! Well they were straight in there, signing up for free lessons left right and centre. I think the kids thought they were back at the THSG!
Calvin and Lucy immediately went into my bad books when they signed up for 2 putting lessons within 15 minutes! Oli definitely won golfer of the day though, as he said – “I don’t need a putting lesson Oli, as I have you and you’re the best putting coach in the world.”
They rest of the day was spent behind the 18th green, and was definitely the highlight for everyone. THSG/ROWGC hats and shirts were signed by anyone and everyone, and the juniors even started signing each other’s shirts!!
Our first signature Georgia Hall! Wow, what a lovely lady. Sarah Kemp, Emily Toy, Xu Y Lin, Flic Johnson, Charlotte Thomas and Charlotte Thompson followed and where so gracious with their time.
Katherine Kirk was good sport, asking Calvin if he plays and what tournament he plays in. He replied straight away saying yes, I play in Golf sixes. She was very cool indeed.
Emily Toy took the time taking pictures with us and chatting with us although she unfortunately missed the cut by four shots.
The last signature we got was Meg MacLaren. This was a special one for many reasons. Meg was one of the English fans favourites going into the week, and in with a shout of making the Solheim Cup team. On Thursday she played well with a score of one under.
Friday was unfortunately not her day and she really struggled, shooting seven over par to finish six over, the same score as Emily, missing the cut by 4. Meg walked off the 18th distraught. You could see it in her eyes, she was absolutely gutted and close to tears.
As she walked towards the 50-60 excited youngsters hungry for a signature , she put on a brave face, signed every single one and chatted away to the kids asking them about their game. She didn’t need to do that. She could have easily put her head down and walked on past like a handful of players did. But she didn’t and that really impressed me.
On the drive home, I explained to the kids the situation and how upset she was, and that as soon as she found a quiet place without spectators around she could’ve burst into tears. The kids found this story inspirational, and Meg is now their favourite golfer.
What a day we had.....
We even managed to sneak onto the putting green for a little AimPoint practice
No first tee nerves here!!!!
Can you recognise these ROWGC members having a nap at the Open???
